We’re beginning the process of removing the barriers between the Meta Horizon Store and App Lab, which lets any developer who meets basic technical and content requirements release software on the platform. App Lab titles will soon be featured in a dedicated section of the store on all our devices, making them easy for larger audiences to discover. We believe a more open ecosystem is the best way to bring the power of mixed reality to as many people as possible. With more devices, this new ecosystem will offer more choice to consumers and businesses around the world. Developers will have a much larger range of hardware that can run their apps, and more device makers will expand their market to a wider range of users, much like we’ve seen with PCs and smartphones. Developers and creators can take advantage of all these technologies to create mixed reality experiences.

Today, we’re taking a major step toward our vision for a more open computing platform for the metaverse. We’re opening up the operating system that powers our Meta Quest devices to third-party hardware makers, giving developers a larger ecosystem to build for and ultimately creating more choice for consumers. This platform is the product of a decade of investment into the underlying technologies that enable mixed reality, and opening it up means a lot more people will benefit from that investment. We’re working with leading global technology companies to create a new ecosystem of mixed reality devices, and we’re making it even easier for developers to build mixed reality apps. As we begin opening Meta Horizon OS to more device makers, we’re also expanding the ways app developers can reach their audiences.

The social layer of Meta Horizon OS means people’s identities, avatars, social graphs and friend groups can move with them across virtual spaces, and developers can integrate these social features into their apps. And because this social layer is made to bridge multiple platforms, people can spend time together in virtual spaces that exist across mixed reality, mobile and desktop devices. Meta Horizon OS devices will also use the same mobile companion app that Meta Quest owners use today, which we’ll rename to the Meta Horizon app. In this course, students learn the processes of designing products, services and environments focusing on the user experience. 37 Modern Kitchen Ideas We Love

kitchens design kitchen

Our expert team of kitchen designers and installation specialists use industry standard tools and materials for the job, helping you get the kitchen of your dreams. Engage with Christine Markatos Design to help make the kitchen of your dreams a reality. As the heart of the home, your kitchen design should be well thought out concept one in which multiple functions occur daily. It is of utmost importance that your kitchen interior is one where you can comfortably cook, and entertain guests in a beautiful space- all programmed for function in a stylized fashion. Function and aesthetics are of equal importance when designing your kitchens interior, and Christine Markatos Design assists you in achieving just that. A vibrant shade of blue doesn’t have to be intimidating, as shown in this 1920s California bungalow kitchen.

Cabinet organization systems

Consider mosaic tiles, graphic prints, or bold solid slabs to make a modern statement. Incorporate elements of the sea by using a coastal color palette mixed with natural textures such as driftwood, rattan, and sea glass to create a contemporary beachy vibe in your kitchen. Simple kitchens benefit from clean, straight lines and minimal cabinet detailing. Add visual interest with statement pendant lights and a hanging range hood. A single color or tone-on-tone palette can make a small kitchen feel larger and more cohesive. Use this scheme for your cabinets, walls, and backsplash to create a unified look.

Use Light Wood Tones

Skip bar-style seating at your kitchen island and enjoy quality conversations with your loved ones where everyone feels involved. "Conversational islands are definitely back versus looking at the cook doing all the work or feeding you island-side," says Swanson. While some might fear clutter, take this as an opportunity to embrace it. The mix of sizes, colors, and styles packing these open shelves gives a collected feel to this bright and airy kitchen. That's why Becca Interiors employed the age-old trick of using versatile pieces in a small kitchen.

Sleek Neutrals

Desiree Burns of Desiree Burns Interiors embraces the trend and adds a touch of beadboard paneling for texture and sophisticated black accents like pendants and backsplash to make the trend her own. An open kitchen offers the opportunity to use an accent wall to define the space. Use a bold color, like yellow subway tiles arranged in a herringbone pattern, to highlight the kitchen as a central design element in the room. Elongate your kitchen space by extending your backsplash tiles all the way to the ceiling. This is a great way to add visual interest but also to make your space appear more coherent. Simple white subway tiles are a great way to add freshness and light to your backsplash.

Comb the aisles of any flea market or antique store to find one-of-a-kind treasures to enhance the look of a lived-in yet loved kitchen. Make the most of the busiest area in your house with these kitchen ideas. Small kitchens or awkward spaces can definitely pack a punch of wow factor. Consider the mood enhancing effects of color to bring a compact kitchen’s personality to life.

We love John Lewis and Anthropologie for hardware, and just think, new handles are way cheaper than a new kitchen – so, go on, treat yourself to handles you really love. Fill up shelves with lots of lovely knick knacks – crockery, cookware, jugs, flowers, plants, prints, anything and everything that looks pretty. It's these kinds of ramshackle displays that will instantly add a rustic country kitchen feel. Modern kitchens have evolved into multifunctional hubs where anything and everything happens – and we mean everything – so only the best kitchen ideas will make the cut.

Allow enough space to move around and accommodate all necessary appliances and storage. When planning the layout of a kitchen, consider both aesthetics and function to create a balance that enhances the joy and ease of cooking while also meeting the needs of your lifestyle. A well-thought-out kitchen layout can facilitate efficient meal preparation, offer comfortable spaces for dining and entertaining, and harmonize with the overall design scheme of your home.

Maximize a small space by utilizing an open concept to its fullest. This kitchen features two-tone cabinetry and open shelving for storage to visually heighten the room. An island on casters allows for additional surface space and can be moved if needed. The kitchen flows into the dining area with a built-in banquette that features hidden bonus storage.

Add an industrial edge (and save space) with butcher's hooks

While true hardwood floors can be difficult to maintain, there are many other options on the market. Consider laminate wood flooring or porcelain planks that look just like wood but provide easier upkeep. Expansive kitchen windows let in light and fresh air, plus share views of nature. These floor-to-ceiling windows and French doors connect to the home's patio while providing picturesque vantage points. Chalkboard paint can be used in many rooms throughout the house, but applying it in the kitchen is especially helpful.

Creamy white cabinetry and oil-rubbed bronze hardware pair with a rich mahogany island and professional-grade appliances to mimic a well-appointed French kitchen. Beautiful woodwork, arched details, and elegant accessories complete the timeless look. Kitchen flooring can completely change the look and feel of your workspace. Brick flooring is a surprising contrast to classic elements and modern acrylic chairs in this traditional kitchen.

A brand-new kitchen references long-ago eras with a beadboard backsplash and cabinets painted in handsome green and detailed in white porcelain knobs. Leaded-glass doors on the upper cabinets further the vintage style and provide breezy counterpoints to solid base cabinets. They brighten up a space, make it look larger, and allow you to decorate however you want. Try a neutral, monochromatic look for a serene space, or add dashes of bright color to liven up a white kitchen. A custom breakfast nook cozies up to the end of this kitchen countertop. A crystal Sputnik chandelier and lacquered flat kitchen cabinets add a touch of retro glam to this midcentury modern-inspired space.

They'll also make you feel more connected to nature than ever before, from shades of green paint and budding blooms on shelves to more innovative ways to reduce, reuse, and recycle. Clear and prep your design mood boards for the best kitchen design trends of 2024 and beyond. Hannah Tyler Designs knows that a high-contrast space never goes out of style.

Ample overhead lighting and custom cabinetry make the workspace extra functional. When it comes to kitchen ideas, we do tend to think of traditional wall and floor cabinets as being a must, but what if in fact all your space needed was a sizable kitchen island? Keep the walls and floors at the edges of your room free of furniture and just have a kitchen island in the center – sink, oven, and storage all built-in! This modern kitchen by Avery Cox Design leans into mid-century vibes via funky olive green pendant lights, a square-tile backsplash in contrasting black and white, and comfortable seating.

An extra pop of color via a bright yellow door instantly makes the space feel cheerful. There's a dose of modern Scandinavian influence in this kitchen design by Sarah Jefferys Architecture. Pale wood tones cover the walls, ceiling, and floor, while natural light floods the space via large windows and sliding glass doors. A luxurious marble island serves as a grounding focal point in the space, while a hint of whimsy is infused via mustard yellow chairs and ketchup-colored pendants. Clear your kitchen of fuss and clutter with a thoughtfully designed minimalist layout. Think cabinets and appliances with push-to-open technology, plenty of pantry space, floor-to-ceiling cabinetry, easy-to-clean quartz countertops, and grout-free floors.

This kind of shiplap style paneling is bang on trend at the moment – it's a subtle way to add interest into your kitchen and a bit of a rustic feel too. If you are experienced with DIY you can actually create this look yourself with cladding or get a joiner to help you out. And of course, you can always cheat the look with a panel effect wallpaper. Since a splashback is usually such a small area you could be bold with your choice of tiles too. Choose a color or a pattern that could start a whole new color scheme in your kitchen.

To add visual interest to an all-white galley kitchen, consider incorporating dark wooden countertops and wooden floors. This will prevent the space from looking too sterile or one-dimensional. This kitchen's pale blue walls and ornate island are unexpected against white traditional cabinets. Seagrass stool seats add texture, while rich chocolate-brown wood floors warm up the cool color palette. With minimalist cabinetry, neutral color palettes, and metallic accents, modern kitchen ideas are worth pursuing if you crave subtle elegance that will never go out of style. These spaces blend aspects of contemporary design with other styles, including traditional and industrial, for a look that’s current, sleek, yet not sterile.

KITCHEN REMODELING

The classic triangle rule (where the stove, fridge and sink form a triangle) is especially useful for keeping things efficient. With the elements in play, having a pergola or awning is not just a design feature but a necessity that can provide shade and shelter without compromising on outdoor ambiance. Create a luxurious outdoor dining experience with a large metal pergola with a glass ceiling for additional light. When it comes to your home, the kitchen is the center of the action. It's the space where you prepare meals, entertain friends, and gather with your family. Whether you're renovating your current kitchen or designing a brand-new one, finding the right style can be challenging.

Or go for bang on trend dark kitchen ideas

According to Swanson, the trend of undercounter refrigeration is going everywhere as manufacturers respond with dual refrigerators and dual undercounter refrigerator drawers. "We'll also be seeing the continuation of wood tones in kitchens, with the combination of wood and painted cabinetry in more innovative ways," says Casey. For example, 2024 will bring cabinet towers in stained wood with lower cabinets in a painted finish.

Colorful Kitchen Backsplash

A grand gray island stands at the heart of the space and incorporates a beveled marble countertop. White cabinets lighten slab granite countertops and slate gray backsplash tile. This spacious, open-layout kitchen was designed to accommodate cooks and guests alike. The roomy work zone gives the chef elbow room and counter space, while the island and adjacent eating area provide spots for guests to chat. A shiplap ceiling, white cabinets, and touches of color amplify the cozy atmosphere. Blue cabinets with a gray undertone create a peaceful (and perfectly French) look.

Use slimline units to maximise space

For a touch of warmth and texture, exposed brick walls or backsplashes can serve as a focal point. This can mean everything from built-in storage that may go as high as the ceiling; a large central island for meal prep and casual dining; and a neutral palette that includes natural wood accents. Choosing clean lines, classic finishes, and functional layouts will ensure that your kitchen looks and feels updated and fresh, no matter your chosen style.

Glossy White

We love this bright sunny yellow, but we've been seeing green kitchens popping up on Instagram more frequently and even pink ones! Like white, grey is great backdrop color that you can easily pair with other colors to create new looks. We have a whole gallery of grey kitchen ideas if you want more inspiration and to see how different grey tones look in a space. Another update for your current kitchen, or to consider in your new kitchen design, is switching up the sink. A new sink style, plus a few decorating tweaks, can totally change the feel of a kitchen.

Natural Light

These designs break down the barriers of traditional kitchen walls, encouraging interaction between the cook and their guests or family members and making the kitchen the true heart of the home. The open-plan design invites more natural light, creating a bright, airy atmosphere that exudes a sense of freedom and togetherness. Keep your kitchen clutter-free by utilizing smart storage solutions and maintaining a minimalist aesthetic throughout the space. Opt for simple cabinet designs in neutral colors and maximize natural lighting. Keep your kitchen light and airy with a neutral color palette or soft pastel hues.

Use it as a creative outlet for artwork or doodles, or add functionality by jotting down grocery or chore lists. Pay attention to how you use each part of the space to decide which kitchen lights you need where. The overall look of your kitchen lighting should complement the kitchen’s style, too obviously. If a whole tiled wall doesn't take your fancy, why not just make a change by retiling your backsplash? Again it's a job you can do yourself too if you want to keep costs down, and will only take an afternoon. Just check out our guide to how to tile a backsplash for practical steps.

Streamlined Storage

Display your drinkware on floating shelves and always have a cutting board handy for slicing fresh citrus. Who ever said that storage is boring, or that function cancels out any fun factor?! And voila - ‘shelfie’ worthy storage jars with playful, eye-catching allure. The kitchen is the heart and soul of the home, where households and families congregate, cook, socialise and share mealtimes and happy moments together. Create a welcoming space, full of cozy flock-and-gather appeal with usable kitchen essentials that exude character and tactile appeal.

The right style of an island can make or break the inside of your home. Lars Remodeling & Design has over 33 years of experience with kitchen islands. Like our kitchen remodels, our bathroom remodeling service caters to all sizes, styles and budgets. Our team of highly skilled designers and installers will guide you through the process and provide a beautiful bathroom as a result.

That's obviously thanks to the wall of black metal-framed, Crittal-style windows (very stylish) running along the outer side of this space. You can make a kitchen island even more of a feature in your space by simply tiling it. You could make this even easier (and cheaper) by using tile stickers.

Chapter 7 Design Matrices Statistics for Genomics: Differential Expression

design matrices

The design matrix excludes the intercept term for the first factor added to the function. Only lines reflecting the first 4 parameters are drawn in the plot, representing the mean gene expression of groups A, B, C and D in lane L1 and with handling technician I. Samples are labelled by their sequencing lane (L1 or L2), and coloured black if they are processed by technician I, yellow if they are processed by technician II.

Simple linear regression

This should prompt us to consider how to set up the model properly, figuring out which factors are dependent on others, and ultimately redefining the design matrix. For example, the design matrix can be set tomodel.matrix(~0+group) instead, although we should keep in mind that some pairwise group comparisons would be confounded by batch effects, such as when comparing group A to group C. In this section, we examine several study designs that contain two or more factors as explanatory variables. We begin with an example where we convert two factors of interest into one, and then consider cases where there are factors that are not of interest.

How the design matrix is defined in linear regressions

Repeated measurements are taken from mice, as indicated by the numbers in the plot, such that label ”1” represents MOUSE1. A custom design matrix is created to model mouse IDs, treatment and timepoint (complete R code shown in the main article). Fitted lines are drawn in pink for treatment X, and in aqua for treatment Y. Solid lines represent expected gene expression at timepoint T1, and dashed lines for timepoint T2.

Second, while the straight needle moves upward, the fabric advances one stitch and the looper moves backward to reach the back of straight needle 5 (as shown in Fig. 1c). Meanwhile the straight needle descends through the fabric for the second time and further down through the triangular loop formed by the looper, the facial suture, and the bobbin thread (as shown in Fig. 1d). In conclusion, the principle of automatic bobbin exchange technology is relatively simple and reliable, but it cannot fundamentally solve the problems of interruption of thread traces and time loss caused by many stoppages.

Accounting for factors that are not of interest

At the same time, the mechanism identity condition is used to avoid the elimination calculation of some intermediate variables, improve computational efficiency, and ultimately obtain the spatial displacement equations of tip P. At present, a lot of beneficial research has been conducted worldwide on automatic bobbin exchange devices and the innovative design of the thread-hooking mechanism, meeting the large supply of bobbin thread. Essentially, the automatic bobbin exchange device is to use manipulators to replace the empty bobbin with a full one by simulating the process of manually exchanging the bobbin during machine stopping. Hu et al. (2015) in China designed an automatic bobbin thread replacement system based on CAN-BUS (Controller Area Network-BUS), which improved the expandability and flexibility of the system, but the efficiency improvement was limited. Philippe Mall and Kinoshita proposed a box-magazine-type automatic bobbin exchanging device with a compact structure that can accommodate eight bobbins for replacing but only for thick bobbin thread and non-overlapping embroidered stitches (Jana, 2018).

Remember that the parameter will now represent the difference between the groups instead of the second group mean. Columns in the design matrix can be moved and reordered, or retrieved from another design matrix available in the Results Browser window. This allows us to use matrix algebra to find an estimator of the regression coefficients (see the lecture on linear regression to see how).

The correlation between measurements taken from the same mouse is estimated as -0.05, which is considered to be quite a small correlation value. This is expected in our example since we did not program specific mouse effects into the dataset. In the case of a negative estimated correlation, the blocking variable should be removed and we can resume the usual modelling approach of accounting for thegroup fixed effect only in the design matrix. For real use cases, correlation estimates of 0.7 to 0.9 are considered high but not uncommon.

design matrices

Each row represents an individual object, with the successive columns corresponding to the variables and their specific values for that object. The design matrix is used in certain statistical models, e.g., the general linear model.[1][2][3] It can contain indicator variables (ones and zeros) that indicate group membership in an ANOVA, or it can contain values of continuous variables. When performing differential expression analysis on genomic data (such as RNA-seq experiments), scientists usually use linear models to determine the direction (did expression go up or down?) and magnitude (by how much?) of the change in expression. These scientists are interested in understanding the relationship between gene expression (the “response” variable”) and variables that affect expression, such as a treatment or cell type (“explanatory variable(s)”).

We, however, refer to this model specifically as amean-reference model to distinguish it from the general model form that we use for covariate explanatory variables. The means model and the mean-reference model are equivalent models that differ in parameterisation, such that the form of the model is different but one could obtain equivalent values for the expected gene expression of wildtype and mutant from both models. Based on the analysis of the chain stitch formation principle, the design requirements for motion trajectory and posture of the hooking mechanism are proposed. The methods of direction cosine matrix and mechanism identity condition are applied in kinematics modeling and analysis of the RRSC mechanism. The optimization design model and computer-aided software are developed, then the human–computer interaction optimization method is used to obtain optimal solutions to meet working requirements.

We also discuss options for non-linear fitted models that extend beyond the simple framework of y-intercept and slope. Whilst in practice the vast majority of study designs involve only factor variables, which we have covered extensively over multiple sections, this section is useful for the occasional study where the relationship between gene expression and a given covariate is of interest. Each of the horizontal lines inFigure 1 are defined by their y-intercept (and a slope of 0), and are themselves regression models. We, however, will refer specifically to models of this type as ameans model since the model parameters represent the group means. This also allows us to differentiate these models from the general regression models applied to covariates where the y-intercept and slope can both be non-zero.

In the mechanism, the kinematic pairs between rocker 2 and the frame and linkage 1 are cylindrical pair and spherical pairs, respectively, and those between crank 0 and the frame and linkage 1 are both rotary pairs (as shown in Fig. 3). While the mechanism works, crank 0 is driven to rotate by the power input shaft, and it then drives linkage 1 for spatial compound motion to drive rocker 2. Finally, rocker 2 not only does the oscillation motion but also the reciprocation motion along the vertical direction shown in Fig. By optimizing the parameters of the thread-hooking mechanism, under the combined action of these two movements, the tip of looper 4 fixed on rocker 2 can form a motion trajectory that meets the embroidery chain stitch. The y-intercepts for treatment X and treatment Y are estimated as -0.06 and 1.09 respectively.

In the plot, data points are labelled by treatment, and a fitted line is drawn for each of the treatments. The group factor is converted from two factors representing tissue samples and cell types. The kinematic simulation analysis of the mechanism is carried out, verifying the correctness of the theoretical model and design results of the mechanism.

Hart took time off from the band in February 1971, owing to his father, an accountant, having absconded with the band's money,[46] leaving Kreutzmann once again as the sole percussionist. Tom "TC" Constanten was added as a second keyboardist from 1968 to 1970, to help Pigpen keep up with an increasingly psychedelic sound, while Pigpen transitioned more into playing various percussion instruments and sang. After Garcia's death in 1995, former members of the band, along with other musicians, toured as The Other Ones in 1998, 2000, and 2002, and as The Dead in 2003, 2004, and 2009. In 2015, the four surviving core members marked the band's 50th anniversary in a series of concerts that were billed as their last performances together.[17] There have also been several spin-offs featuring one or more core members, such as Dead & Company, Furthur, the Rhythm Devils, Phil Lesh and Friends, RatDog, and Billy & the Kids. With the exception of 1975, when the band was on hiatus and played only four concerts, Grateful Dead performed many concerts every year, from their formation in April 1965, until July 9, 1995.[137] Initially all their shows were in California, principally in the San Francisco Bay Area and in or near Los Angeles.

Musical style and legacy

Though the house is a private residence and you cannot go inside (without knowing the owners, that is), 710 Ashbury is an absolute must-see for any Grateful Deadhead in San Francisco. I was able to visit the house on my trip to San Francisco, and although it is privately owned, I still loved seeing it and envisioning all that happened there.

Bill Kreutzmann played drums, and in September 1967 was joined by a second drummer, New York City native Mickey Hart, who also played a wide variety of other percussion instruments. The Grateful Dead, also known as ‘The Dead” was a jam band founded in Palo Alto, California in 1965. Known for their eclectic style and long bouts of noodling, the band fused together elements of rock, blues, jazz, folk, and country to form their own psychedelic sound.

How to Visit The Grateful Dead House in San Francisco (1966 –

Janis Joplin lived down the street from the Grateful Dead at 635 Ashbury Street in the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood of San Francisco. At a different time, Charles Manson also lived in this house before he left to start his family. During their heyday the Dead lived in a nondescript Victorian at 710 Ashbury where they penned many of their hits. The house today is a normal residence, but some dedicated fans have left tributes in the form of flowers or artwork. The Grateful Dead actually only lived here between 1966 and 1968 but that was enough time to make this home a semi-religious spot people trekked to from pretty much every corner of the earth.

Though they had no radio hits, the band is on the charts as one of the most successful touring shows in music history. Their largest concert audience came in 1973 when they played, along with the Allman Brothers Band and the Band, before an estimated 600,000 people at the Summer Jam at Watkins Glen.[139] They played to an estimated total of 25 million people, more than any other band, with audiences of up to 80,000 attending a single show. Many of these concerts were preserved in the band's tape vault, and several dozen have since been released on CD and as downloads. The Dead were known for the tremendous variation in their setlists from night to night—the list of songs documented to have been played by the band exceeds 500.[140] The band has released four concert videos under the name View from the Vault.

Main career (1967–

The archive includes correspondence, photographs, fliers, posters, and several other forms of memorabilia and records of the band. Also included are unreleased videos of interviews and TV appearances that will be installed for visitors to view, as well as stage backdrops and other props from the band's concerts. Deadheads, particularly those who collected tapes, were known for keeping close records of the band's setlists and for comparing various live versions of the band's songs, as reflected in publications such as the various editions of "Deadbase" and "The Deadhead's Taping Compendium". This practice continues into the 21st century on digital forums and websites such as the Internet Archive, which features live recordings of nearly every available Grateful Dead show and allows users to discuss and review the site's shows. Shortly after Mydland found his place in the early 1980s, Garcia's health began to decline. After beginning to curtail his opiate usage in 1985 gradually, Garcia slipped into a diabetic coma for several days in July 1986.

1970 included tour dates in New Orleans, Louisiana, where the band performed at The Warehouse for two nights. On January 31, 1970, the local police raided their hotel on Bourbon Street, and arrested and charged 19 people with possession of various drugs.[45] The second night's concert was performed as scheduled after bail was posted. Eventually, the charges were dismissed, except those against sound engineer Owsley Stanley, who was already facing charges in California for manufacturing LSD. This event was later memorialized in the lyrics of the song "Truckin'", a single from American Beauty that reached number 64 on the charts. Ron "Pigpen" McKernan played keyboards, percussion, and harmonica until shortly before his death in 1973 at the age of 27. Garcia, Weir, and McKernan shared the lead vocal duties more or less equally; Lesh sang only a few leads, but his tenor was a key part of the band's three-part vocal harmonies.

The band's lineups included Jimmy Herring and Warren Haynes on guitar, Jeff Chimenti and Rob Barraco on keyboards, and Joan Osborne on vocals.[63] In 2008, members of the Dead played two concerts, called "Deadheads for Obama" and "Change Rocks". The Grateful Dead's early music (in the mid-1960s) was part of the process of establishing what "psychedelic music" was, but theirs was essentially a "street party" form of it. They developed their "psychedelic" playing as a result of meeting Ken Kesey in Palo Alto, California, and subsequently becoming the house band for the Acid Tests he staged.[101] They did not fit their music to an established category such as pop rock, blues, folk rock, or country & western. Individual tunes within their repertoire could be identified under one of these stylistic labels, but overall their music drew on all of these genres and, more frequently, melded several of them.

Mydland died after the summer tour in 1990 and Vince Welnick, former keyboardist for the Tubes, joined as a band member, while Bruce Hornsby, who had a successful career with his band the Range, joined as a touring member. Both performed on keyboards and vocals—Welnick until the band's end, and Hornsby mainly from 1990 to 1992. One of his main influences was bluegrass music, and he also performed—on banjo, one of his other great instrumental loves, along with the pedal steel guitar—in bluegrass bands, notably Old & In the Way with mandolinist David Grisman. One of the group's earliest major performances in 1967 was the Mantra-Rock Dance—a musical event held on January 29, 1967, at the Avalon Ballroom by the San Francisco Hare Krishna temple. Grateful Dead performed at the event along with the Hare Krishna founder Bhaktivedanta Swami, poet Allen Ginsberg, bands Moby Grape and Big Brother and the Holding Company with Janis Joplin, donating proceeds to the temple.[43][44] The band's first LP, The Grateful Dead, was released on Warner Brothers in 1967.

After he recovered, the band released In the Dark in July 1987, which became its best-selling studio album and produced its only top-40 single, "Touch of Grey". Also that year, the group toured with Bob Dylan, as heard on the album Dylan & the Dead. On October 2, 1967, narcotics officers, reporters, and TV crews stormed the Grateful Dead house looking for drugs and they found a pound of pot. Bob Weir (the Grateful Dead’s rhythm guitarist and sometimes vocalist) and Ron “Pigpen” KcKernan (vocals, organ, harmonica) were arrested along with 8 others for possession of marijuana. What was once the communal home and headquarters of the famous jam band the Grateful Dead, the house was under their control from October 1966 to March 1968.

In that time, the home saw a ton of action including hosting a ton of famous guests (hello, Janis Joplin and Neal Cassady), and the infamous drug bust of 1967 (we’ll get into more on that below). Stanley's sound systems were delicate and finicky, and frequently brought shows to a halt with technical breakdowns. After Stanley went to jail for manufacturing LSD in 1970, the group briefly used house PAs, but found them to be even less reliable than those built by their former soundman. On February 2, 1970, the group contacted Bob Heil to use his system.[150] In 1971, the band purchased their first solid-state sound system from Alembic Studios. Because of this, Alembic would play an integral role in the research, development, and production of the Wall of Sound. Owsley Stanley met the Grateful Dead during an Acid Test held by Ken Kesey and The Merry Pranksters, and he eventually became their lead soundman.

Lesh was the last member to join the Warlocks before they changed their name to Grateful Dead, replacing Dana Morgan Jr., who had played bass for a few gigs. Since 1995, the former members of the Grateful Dead have also pursued solo music careers. Both Bob Weir & RatDog[67][68] and Phil Lesh and Friends[69][70] have performed many concerts and released several albums. Their numerous studio albums were generally collections of new songs that they had first played in concert. The band was also famous for its extended musical improvisations, having been described as having never played the same song the same way twice. Their concert sets often blended songs, one into the next, often for more than three songs at a time.

A walk down Haight street will greet you with a huge Jerry Garcia mural, sidewalk art, and the iconic skull logo at pretty much every turn. Gift shops sell memorabilia and t-shirts, Ben and Jerry’s ice cream shop sells “Cherry Garcia” ice cream, and record stores prominently display the Dead’s discography in their windows. Even those who know nothing of the Dead and their impact quickly realize that they are a cultural icon. But ironically, even with all this fanfare, very few people realize the Dead actually lived a block away up Ashbury Street.

As a tourist, you cannot go inside the Grateful Dead house in San Francisco as it is privately owned. Don’t attempt to get through the gate without their explicit permission, and don’t snoop through the windows. Well, to be completely honest with you, the house is a private residence – a gated private residence. However, that doesn’t mean that the house isn’t worth a visit on your way to or from Haight Ashbury, as it’s just around the corner from this famous intersection.

They also performed, in 1965 and 1966, with Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters, as the house band for the Acid Tests. The Grateful Dead have been a San Francisco icon since the 1960s, and though their leader Jerry Garcia has since passed, they remain a symbol of the city. During the 60s they were the embodiment of the Hippie movement and a rallying symbol of peace and love. Even today, 50 years later, the city, especially the Haight Ashbury area, is full of tributes commemorating all the Dead have done for the city and for music in general.

regression Meaning of "design" in design matrix? Cross Validated

design matrices

Reading down column 5, we see that element 5 receives inputs from elements 1, 3, and 4. Thus, a mark in an off-diagonal cell (e.g., cell 3,5) represents an interaction that is both an input and an output, depending on whether one takes the perspective of its provider (element 3) or its receiver (element 5). In the case where one wants to fit smooth curves to multiple groups where samples for the groups are taken at different time points, using regression splines allow the fitted trends to be compared between the groups whilst a polynomial fit does not. Furthermore, splines tend to give more sensible and stable curves with better behaviour at the boundaries of the fit than polynomials.

The International DSM Conference provides a platform for researchers, practitioners, and developers of DSM‐related tools to exchange experiences, discuss trends, and showcase results and tools. It also acts as a forum for developing new ideas regarding complexity management in all kinds of industries and from many different perspectives. The conference mission is to enhance understanding and managing complex interdenpent relationships within and across  product/process/people architectures. Many of the recent developments in numerical linear algebra occurredafter the development of the statistical theory, with the result thatthose who write about theory as they learned it many years ago, tendto use constructions that don't correspond to current knowledge. Notice that, by default, the determinant function returns thelogarithm of the modulus and, separately, the sign.

Design matrix

We begin with fitting some simple models and work up towards more complex ones such as the fitting of cyclical models. Although not focusing purely on design matrices, the user’s guides for thelimma andedgeR8,9 software packages also contain many example case studies for different experimental designs. In most statistical models the design matrix is required to have full-rank, that is, its columns must be linearly independent (see, e.g., the normal linear regression model).

Figure 6.

It is now the research trend to carry out thread-hooking mechanism innovation to achieve a large amount of bobbin thread. Then the kinematics modeling and analysis, optimization design, simulation verification and prototype performance testing of the thread-hooking mechanism are carried out. Design of experiments focuses on how to construct the design matrix and model matrix since it happens before data is collected. If the data is already collected then the design is set in stone but you can still change the model matrix. Sometimes a designed experiment will have in the design matrix certain fixed columns called covariates that can't control but you can observe.

In that case, one could treat time as a factor rather than a covariate to avoid the interpretation of curves, and to obtain differences between distinct time points explicitly. In order to make all possible pairwise comparisons between the treatments, we model gene expression using a means model. Due to its parameterisation, the means model is simple to work with when specifying the comparisons of interest in the contrast matrix. We know from the previous section that thetreatment factor can be represented in a means model or a mean-reference model using the design matrices coded asmodel.matrix(~0+treatment) ormodel.matrix(~treatment) respectively. Either representation would give equivalent models, and so it would be unnecessary to describe both models for the same exercise. Based on the comparison of interest at hand, we demonstrate the use of one of the models using the most direct approach.

3.1 Regression: Continuous Variables

When we use an R function such as lm or aov or glm to fit a linearor a generalized linear model, the model matrix is created from theformula and data arguments automatically. The following code will create a design matrix based on dex treatment. Since this is a categorical variable, we need to use a means or mean-reference model.

Nevertheless, this optimization software still has the characteristics of simple compilation, simple operation, and obvious optimization effects, which can meet the optimization requirements. In similar institutional optimization situations, it is still a good option. Set C as the original point, then the axis z coincides with the axis z2z2, and axis x coincides with axis x2; the spatial rectangular coordinate system is established. The spatial displacement equations of tip P of the looper is the following. SmartDraw's home design software is easy for anyone to use—from beginner to expert.

We are using finiteprecision arithmetic and the answers we produce will be subject toround-off and other numerical errors. (setting nu and nv to zero suppresses evaluation of the singularvectors, just like only.values in eigen). It turns out that we don't need to form X'X explicitly to evaluatewhether or not it is positive definite.

The Design Structure Matrix (DSM)

For theparticular case of a model matrix, X, the determinant of X'X, written |X'X|,measures the volume of the parallelepiped spanned by the columns ofX, which does have some applications in statistics. The type of explanatory variables in our experiment will determine what our model looks like. An upwards trend in gene expression over time is also accounted for by including the time covariate in the design matrix. This restriction is due to the design matrix set up which excludes the intercept term. The terminology and concepts covered in this section are summarised in the table below, in the context of modelling gene expression data. The table also extends to some definitions and descriptions covered later in the article, and is a useful resource to refer to from time-to-time.

The high-speed camera tests of the thread-hooking mechanism prototype are conducted in the Key Laboratory of Planting Equipment Technology, Zhejiang Sci-tech University. 3D printing technology is used to process the mechanism parts for building the test prototype. Mark points were painted on the looper tip, a Vision Research (Phantom V9.1) high-speed camera was used to record the motion trajectory of the looper tip, and Photoshop software was used to process the video. The controller is used to send a set of pulses, then the actuator receives the pulses and drives the motor to achieve power input.

The mark points are marked in the software, the layers are overlapped to display them, and the motion trajectory of the looper tip was obtained as shown in Fig. We measured with vernier calipers and calculated that S is 4.93 mm, θ is 16° measured through the trajectory picture, and L is 21.27 mm through calculation (as shown in Fig. 11d to f). From the results of debugging, it can be seen that in the absence of clear rules and the inability to find optimization paths, the law of trajectory is discovered through multiple rounds of debugging, and gradually finding out the optimal solution. Firstly, it relies on manual experience for debugging, which results in a relatively large workload. Secondly, it is difficult to find out the optimization laws if some parameters have a significant impact on the trajectory.

It is also easy to think of each diagonal cell as potentially having inputs entering from its top and bottom and outputs leaving from its left and right sides. The sources and destinations of these input and output interactions are identified by marks in the off-diagonal cells. Examining any row in the matrix reveals all of the outputs from the element in that row (which are inputs to other elements). Looking down any column of the matrix shows all of the inputs to the element in that column (which are outputs from other elements). For example, in the figure below, reading across row 2, we see that element 2 provides outputs to elements 3 and 4.

Inpractice we don't form the projection matrices but for illustration wecan. Will produce a rank-deficient model matrix if a separate column foreach coefficient is introduced. In statistics the most important decompositions apply to a modelmatrix, X, or to the cross-product (in the sense of X'X, R functioncrossprod) of a model matrix. Numerical linear algebra is an area where the theory/practice divideis particularly jarring. Just about everything done in numerical linearalgebra is based on matrix decompositions and using suchdecompositions to simplify expressions. Other than the spectral (oreigenvalue/eigenvector) decomposition of a square matrix, decompositions are rarely mentioned in a linear algebra course.

Unless you have a phone plan that includes international data, your phone’s data will not work in Europe. And while having phone service isn’t entirely necessary, I would recommend at least one person in your travel group has international data on their phone for the duration of the cruise. Unlike in the Caribbean or Mexican ports where you can usually get by with USD, this is not accepted in Europe. I also recommend avoiding certain clothing items that will make you stick out as a tourist, including apparel with American sports team logos, any type of patriotic or political attire, and camo patterns. Whether wood-fired pizzas in Naples, baguettes and croissants in Nice, paella in Barcelona, or gelato in Rome, trying new foods is a key aspect of traveling through the Mediterranean. Learning the basics of the language spoken in the countries you will visit on a Mediterranean cruise can make your experience smoother.

Learn About Croatia Through Its Food

In the Mediterranean, though, it’s good to have an idea of what you would like to do in each port and book excursions accordingly. Many Mediterranean ports are easy to explore on your own, which will save you money in the long run, but plenty of cruisers prefer the security and ease of an organized shore excursion. Home of Napoleon Bonaparte, Corsica is an island located just south of France and right above Sardinia, Italy. Not only did he grow up here, but he was even baptized in the Notre Dame Cathedral right in town, and his family home now serves as a museum. To take in its beauty, visit the Calanques de Piana — breathtaking yet dramatic red-rock cliffs. Here, you can visit caves, overlook the deep blue ocean, and spot eagles flying overhead.

While meat such as lamb, pork and veal are found everywhere, especially in gyros or keftethes (meatballs), fish and seafood are the undisputed stars, due to proximity to the sea. Cruise to Greece and Greek Isles where temples, amphitheaters and villages preserved in volcanic ash still reveal the mysteries of the past. Enjoy dramatic sunsets across translucent waters while exploring the white cliffs of Milos, or transport yourself to the ancient past at ruins found on nearly every Greek island. The Temple of Aphaia looms over Aegina, while Delos Island hosts the incredible Terrace of the Lions. You'll find the world-famous Acropolis on Rhodes Island and the Akrotiri on Santorini. But don't forget to watch the sun rise over the Aegean while visiting the renowned windmills of Mykonos.

These lines offer a variety of itinerary choices, so you can find the Mediterranean ports you most want to visit. You'll also find lots of restaurant choices and evening entertainment options to keep you occupied at night when the ship is sailing. Most major cruise lines send at least one ship to the Mediterranean every year. Even Carnival Cruise Line, known for its affordable cruises out of U.S. home ports, offers some Mediterranean sailings, as does Disney Cruise Line, which typically bases its ships near its theme parks. Some so-called Mediterranean cruises actually spend most of their time on the Adriatic Sea, sailing from Venice and visiting ports in Croatia and Greece, and sometimes Montenegro and Albania.

BEST MEDITERRANEAN CRUISES

On a cruise you will be able to visit multiple European countries while only unpacking once. Everyone has their favorite list of the best Mediterranean cruise ports (as evidenced by the discussion I just had with TPG's cruise team about which to include). Some travelers want to hit all the most popular cities, while others prioritize the ability to walk right off the ship into the heart of the town. Some ports are better for historical attractions, others for cafe culture or outdoor activities. Some bring travelers to the French and Italian rivieras for food, wine and cultural pursuits.

After you book a cruise to the Mediterranean, it’s time to plan your days in port. While it’s not necessary to plan everything in advance, it’s helpful to have an idea of what is offered at each port in your itinerary. While it’s true that a Mediterranean cruise will not allow you to dive as deep into local culture compared to traveling more slowly on a land-based vacation, a cruise offers its own set of benefits. Another common concern for those planning a cruise to the Mediterranean is they will “miss out” on European culture and lifestyle by spending evenings on a cruise ship instead of on land. If you embark in Barcelona, you’re joining a cruise that many have already been on for several days.

Azamara is a luxurious option, but it’s not just about glitz and glamour on this line. The cruise line also emphasizes hyper-local experiences to allow its passengers to dive deep into the history, food, culture, and life of its ports of call, even if they’re there just for a day. Which luxury line is best for your Mediterranean cruise will come down to what you're looking for in a luxury ship and a European itinerary. However, Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Silversea Cruises stand out for including a large variety of shore excursions in their cruise fares. If you're a foodie, these two lines plus Oceania Cruises are notable for their culinary tours in port, plus destination-themed cooking classes on board. The two-week trip stops in 10 different ports in Italy, Greece, Israel, and Cyprus.

Try a simple shrimp and pasta dish, or go wild with octapodi kokkinisto, octopus in tomato sauce during your Greece cruise. Excavations of Akrotiri on Santorini Island date back to the Manoan Bronze Age, where the settlement was preserved in ash following a volcanic eruption in 1627 B.C. The site is still being excavated today, and you can witness history firsthand by exploring the vast settlement and the enormous ongoing archaeological dig. The tour then takes in hot springs and mud baths, where you can recharge your batteries.

The cruise port of Southampton features tons of diverse attractions that provide insight into England’s culture and storied past, including fortresses, gardens and national parks. Incredible mosaic art and ancient architecture grace this small port city, often used as a jump-off point for cruisers looking to spend some time in Venice. While a smaller ship will come at a lower price tag, it’s never a good idea to pick a cruise solely based on price. Looking into each ship’s amenities, dining options, cabin categories, and onboard activities can help you decide which size ship will suit you best. Unsurprisingly, Royal Caribbean’s newest ships come at a higher price tag compared to its older ships in the Mediterranean. How much a cruise costs can vary depending if you choose to sail on a larger ship compared to a smaller ship.

From Mykonos to Malta, we’ve curated a collection of the top spots to have a luxurious experience on your Mediterranean cruise. Preparing your house for an extended vacation can seem like a huge task, but doing a few things before you go will make your trip carefree. From the mainstream French and Italian Rivieras to secluded idylls in the Balkans, your search for the best Mediterranean beaches ends here.

Explore the Old City of Montenegro on your Mediterranean vacation trip, where you can see huge forts, ornate churches, and beautiful museums. Hike to the top of the Fortifications of Kotor — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — and witness some of the most amazing panoramic views you've ever seen. When you look out at the horizon, you'll see sapphire waters meeting lush green landscape and towering mountains. Taste buzara, a dish filled with shellfish, shrimp, and prawns cooked in red or white sauce. Don't worry, it's time to grab a fork and indulge in ispod saca, which is made with veal, lamb, or goat and then roasted slowly with veggies like potatoes, carrots, and more. While on your Mediterranean cruise you may discover that Barcelona, Spain is a foodie paradise.

For any cruises listed, Cruise Critic does not guarantee any specific rates or prices. Discover idyllic beaches and ancient ruins in the birthplace of poetry and art with a cruise to Greece and the Greek Isles. The Mediterranean region has a temperate climate, but it still gets chilly in the spring and fall and can be brutally hot in the summer. Check the weather before your sail date and pack for the predicted temperatures — with layers, in case the forecasters are wrong and it's unseasonably hot or cold. The majority of ships, however, arrive in the spring and depart in the fall, choosing warmer climes like the Caribbean for holiday sailings.

Don't miss out on Crni rizot, a dish inspired by Croatia's neighbors in Italy made up of black risotto, with squid ink, or try Gregada, a fish stew that's made with scorpion fish or grouper. If there was ever a place that combined culture and romance to perfection, it's seen most with a trip to Italy. Stroll through cobblestone streets in cities like Florence and Rome, or take to the canals in Venice. If you're interested in more of a sunny holiday, the Amalfi Coast provides just that.
